What is Envelope folding ?
A. As name suggests, end-folds in the pack are pressed against the ends of the product and resemble a typical envelope. A regular shaped product like soap bars can be neatly packed in this style.

What is a Horizontal form - fill and seal (HFFS) machine and why is it called so ?
A. This machine forms a tube by pulling sealable film over a forming block by means of pairs of pulling and sealing rollers. Product is pushed into the tube in a timed way. Ends of the tubes are crimped, sealed and cut to form individual packs. In a horizontal machine the tube is drawn horizontally and the product is pushed on a horizontal conveyor, hence the name.

How does the package formed on the machine look?
A. Pack formed on HFFS has a long seam running parallel to the product along the centre line of the base of pack. Two end seals also called Fin seals, complete the pack. This pack is also called pouch pack or pillow pack because of its shape.

What wrapping materials are typically used on HFFS machines ?
A. Typically laminates like Polyester / OPP, BOPP / BOPP, CPP / BOPP, Polyester / PE or plain BOPP are used in HFFS machines. Advantage of using laminates is that outer layer can be reverse printed to give a glossy print appearance on the outside at the same time preventing printing chemicals coming in contact with edible products like biscuits. All materials used on HFFS must have sealable inside surface.

Which is the favoured way of packing soap ?
A. Toilet soaps are packed in both pouch shaped packs and envelope type overwraps. Although it is a matter of personal choice, there are a few factors that make envelope type overwrap a better choice.Over wrapping or envelope type packing (with stiffener and Paper / PET laminate heat sealable) has following distinct advantages over pouch pack. Because of this, world over this is considered a better method of packing. Some of the advantages are:

Brand Image : All premium categories of toilet soap produced by renowned multinational companies are either packed in cartons or over wrapped with stiffener and outer paper / PET laminate. This has created a strong brand image over the years as a standard of packing for most recognized toilet soaps.

The fact that this type of packing gives a tight and well defined form to the packet, makes it ideally suitable for display. In contrast pouch pack is ill-fitting and shapeless which does not help strengthen the brand image.

Product Protection : Over wrapped toilet soaps with a stiffener give adequate protection to delicate and smoothly finished toilet soap. Tight packing does not allow any rubbing between the packing material and the delicate toilet soap. Pouch pack on the other hand cannot protect toilet soap from small damage during handling and by the time toilet soap reaches the customers, it can have finger nail nicks or dents because of falls and rubbing marks because of the loose packaging.

Shelf Display : Over wrapped packs have well defined geometry and can be easily stacked and displayed on racks, whereas pouch packs are impossible to stack.
Material handling and storing: It is easier to count and pack C / B C box.
Over wrapped packs allow minute aroma to percolate through the wrapper which is an important feature for the customer who wants to sniff before buying;
pouch pack does not allow this facility. The cost of packing both the styles are comparable to deserve merit, although it varies from country to country. In India for example, overwrapping is economical. Flow wrap is ideal for guest toilet soap (hotel pack) as these can be chained together. Over wrapping has lost some ground mainly because of the fact that over wrapping machines were prohibitively priced as compared to pouch packing machines.

OUR NEW GENERATION OVER WRAPPING WHICH OFFER GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY PRESENT AN IDEAL SOLUTION FOR OVER WRAPPING OF TOILET SOAPS, WITH ALL ITS ADVANTAGES.

Why go in for Mechanised Packing ?
A. Mechanised packing has numerous advantages. A few of the advantages are:

Labour saving
Better and neater packing
Less wrapper cutlength
Space saving
Saving in electricity
Consistent quality of packing

Can different sizes be packed on your machines ?
A. All the machines (FINSEAL 11S, WRAPPER 4000, WRAPPER 4000 T) can be customized to suit different sizes by merely changing a few parts.

What is the role of stiffener in packing toilet soap in envelope-type folding machine ?
A. Stiffener apart from protecting the delicate soap also provides straight edges along which side folds are made. This is very helpful when packing soaps with curved facets.

Top

How much wrapper is required to wrap a soap cake ?
A. Wrapper size can be calculated as follows: Cut length = Perimeter of soap cross section + 18 mm (minimum). It is better to wrap a paper around soap to find perimeter. Wrapper width: Length of soap + Thickness of soap (at the thickest point) -6 mm.

Top

What about stiffner size ?
A. Stiffner width = Length of soap - 1.5 mm
Stiffner cut length = Perimeter of the soap cross-section

What are the methods used for sealing on overwrapping machines ?
A. Wrapper can be sealed either by heat application or by cold gum application. For heat sealability, wrapper should have either a heat sealable layer or hot melt coating on the inside.
Both WRAPPER 4000 and WRAPPER 4000 T machines are equipped with this feature.
For cold gum sealing, special formulation gum is applied on the wrapper of the wrapping machine. This option is available on WRAPPER 4000 T model.

Which is the better way of sealing ?
A. Heat sealing, without any doubt. Much better speed can be achieved and machine folders do not require frequent cleaning too.

What is Print Registration Unit? How does it work ?
A. Printed wrapper comes in form of roll which is unwound on the machine during the process of wrapping. Slight difference in pull length will make the printed matter slip a little with respect to the product being wrapped. This slip is cumulative and soon it will become noticeable and be unacceptable. Print registration unit continuously detects the slip and monitors the correction arrangement to ensure centrality of the printed wrapper with respect to the product.
